Low Cherry Tree Orchad

Description

The beginnings of the low growing sour cherry tree orchard date back to 2011, when the first 60 sour cherry trees were planted, thanks to the activity of the foundation “Viegli” and the people of Tukums. In the spring after Imants Ziedonis’ passing, in May 2013, the first lot of planted trees was joined by another 100 saplings, and in 2014 — by another 200 cherry tree saplings, making Imants Ziedonis’ dream come true: “I wanted Tukums to have cherries and only cherries.”

It is often asked why the low-growing cherries are planted? The idea behind this orchard was to make it easier for everyone to visit it during the summer when the cherries are ripe — to come to the garden, pick a cherry, pop it in your mouth and look out over Tukums. Look and remember the two lines from the poem: “Let me approach the world of beauty, like cherries blossoming in Tukums!”
