In the springtime, before the white cherries that are common in Latvia start blossoming, one section of Mālkalns turns pink with blossoms of Japanese cherries or sakuras. The 'Kanzan' variety, which usually blooms in May, was chosen for the garden. The flowers are large and full.
The Japanese cherry orchard in Mālkalns has been created over several years. The first trees were planted in 2021, but most of them followed from 2022 onwards during the Forest Days in autumn with the support of the Latvian Association of Local Governments and the Forest Development Fund at a rate of 5–7 trees each year. Five more trees were planted in the garden by politicians of the Tukums political party “National Alliance”.
