The plantations of various tree species at the GARDEN OF ZIEDONIS on Mālkalns from the 1970s until 1980s have created an unusual FOREST in the city. Oak and lime, rowan trees and hawthorn trees, silver birch, maple, larch and pine.
The oak (Quercus robur) is one of the most important trees for Latvians — both in everyday life and symbolically. Oak trees are the most abundant heritage trees in Latvia. In Latvia, acorns as old as 1200 years have sprouted and continue to grow. Latvian oak variety has the highest wood density of any European oak, which is why many medieval European artists used oak from Latvia as the basis for their paintings. In folk songs and ancient legends, the oak tree symbolises the son and a strong man, which is why the cradle, the cradle rail and the first sauna whisks for baby boys are made of oak. The coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia is also decorated with oak branches.
The red oak (Quercus rubra) was introduced to Latvia from North America. In Latvia, the oak is used in landscaping as it is fast-growing and winter-hardy. In autumn, the leaves turn red and the acorns are larger and rounder than those of the common oak.
