Description

The Cērkste hill is the place from where a view opens up to rolling hills with winding white country roads. The area of Cērkste has appeared in scenes of more than just one film, including the historical movie “Baiga vasara” (2000) when cardboard tanks roamed the area. Meanwhile, Ķemeri sanatorium appears as a lavish ballroom, which it indeed was before the Second World War.

In 2000, the producer Andrejs Ēķis and the director Aigars Grauba made their first co-production “Baiga vasara”. The main characters were played by Uldis Dumpis, Artūrs Skrastiņš and the actress of the Liepāja Theatre Inese Caune. It is a historical feature film about the events that took place in Latvia in 1940. Last Baltic Germans leave Riga and Izolde (Inese Caune) must leave in a few days, too. Also Vilhelms Munters (Uldis Dumpis) is getting ready to leave together with her. The government of Latvia does not know about it, and neither does the wife of V. Munters Natālija (Maija Apine). However, plans change, when Izolde meets the radio reporter Roberts (Artūrs Skrastiņš) and on the following day Soviet tanks enter Riga. Memoirs of the KGB General Sudoplatov are used in the film, however historians question their reliability.
