Beaches and swimming places in Tukums Region
The official swimming season has already started! Every year it starts on May 15 and ends on September 15. Choose a careful place to refresh yourself on the warmest days of summer, remembering your safety and that of your fellow human beings!
There are 11 bathing places by the sea in Tukums region, 6 of which are registered in the register of official bathing places in Latvia. All swimming areas are equipped with minimal infrastructure. On the other hand, there are 9 public swimming places in the inland area of Tukuma region, where you can relax and swim, and which are equipped with minimal infrastructure too.
Swimming places and active recreation by the sea
Abragciems Beach
The official swimming area “Abragciems Beach” is situated in Abragciems of Engure rural municipality. It is situated within the territory of the campsite “Abragciems”. The beach is not signposted, but visitors can follow the signs for camping.
The beach has a changing booth, tables and benches as well as a playground and an information stand. There are bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
No lifeguard is on duty. There are also buoys / cordoned off designated swimming areas. The swimming area is inspected monthly by the Health Service which performs water analyses.
The information stand offers visitors information about the location of the beach and the contact person, as well as a general description of the swimming area and current water quality along with information from the Health Inspectorate if short-term pollution is detected. The stand also contains information about how to get in touch with emergency services, perform first aid in case of drowning, respecting public order and swimming area safety regulations, smoking restrictions and prohibition of pets on the beach along with environmental protection information.
Active recreation offer at the campsite “Abragciems” includes boat hire or water catamaran hire, as well as sports grounds for playing volleyball or other ball games. The camp site offers overnight accommodation in cabins, a service building, which includes toilets, showers, sinks for drinking water and hygiene needs.
The beach has regularly been awarded the Blue Flag mark of quality (except for 2022).

Engure Beach
The unofficial swimming area “Engure Beach” is situated in Engure, past the Health Centre “Engure”. The swimming area is not signposted. Visitors must use the swimming area address.
There is a changing booth and a toilet, as well as benches and tables on the beach. The toilet has disabled access. There is a baby changing unit in the toilet.
There are playground equipment elements and a beach volleyball court on the beach. There are also bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
No lifeguard is on duty. The Health Inspectorate does not survey the swimming grounds and does not perform water quality analyses.
No information stand is set up on the beach; there are only prohibitory signs showing that pets are not allowed on the beach.

Engure Promenade Beach
An unofficial swimming area located in Engure by the southern breakwater and spanning towards Ķesterciems (eastwards). The swimming area is not signposted. Visitors must use the swimming area address.
There is a changing booth and a toilet, as well as some benches for suntanning on the beach. The toilet has disabled access. There is a baby changing unit in the toilet.
There is a beach volleyball court to enjoy active recreation.
No lifeguard is on duty. There are no buoys or any other demarcation implements to restrict the swimming area.

Ķesterciems Beach
The official swimming area “Ķesterciems Beach” is situated in Ķesterciems of Engure rural municipality. The swimming area is not signposted. Visitors must use the swimming area address.
There is a changing booth, an information stand and a toilet on the beach. The toilet has disabled access. There is a baby changing unit in the toilet. There are playground equipment elements, as well as bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of their waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there. You will also find benches and tables on the beach.
There is a beach volleyball court to enjoy active recreation. A small parking lot with designated disabled parking spots is also available. A boarded path connects the parking lot to the beach, and it is suitable for wheelchairs and puschairs to reach the beachfront.
No lifeguard is on duty. There are buoys / cordoned off designated swimming areas. The swimming area is inspected monthly by the Health Service which performs water analyses.

Plieņciems Beach
The unofficial beach “Plieņciems Beach” is situated in the rural municipality of Engure, Plieņciems village, within the territory of ĪADT “Baltā kāpa”. The swimming area is not signposted. The visitors must use the address of the swimming area and the small information stand set up in the parking lot.
The information stand offers visitors information about the location of the swimming area and natural and culture elements in the area. The information stand includes a prohibition of pets and tents on the beach, smoking restrictions and other rules of conduct. No information is available about the swimming area or safety information about behaviour on water, first aid in case of drowning or otherwise.
The parking lot is connected to the beach with a boarded path, but the beach itself is only partially (wheelchair) accessible for people with movement disabilities, because it will be difficult to travel across the sandy part of the beach. The small parking lot has rubbish containers (for recycling).

Apšuciems Beach
The official swimming area “Apšuciems Beach” is situated in Apšuciems of Engure rural municipality. The swimming area is not signposted; a waymarker to find the beach is the Apšuciems first aid station or the hotel-recreation centre “Villa Anna”.
There is a small parking lot by the beach. There is a changing booth, an information stand and a toilet on the beach. The toilet has disabled access. There is a baby changing unit in the toilet. There are playground equipment elements and a beach volleyball court on the beach. There are also bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
No lifeguard is on duty.
The visitors’ information stand only states the prohibition of pets on the beach. No information is available about the swimming area or safety information about behaviour on water, first aid in case of drowning or otherwise.

The official swimming area “Klapkalnciems Beach” is situated in Klapkalnciems of Engure rural municipality. The swimming area is not signposted; visitors must use the information provided at the parking lot by the Sloka-Talsi highway.
There is a changing booth, an information stand and a toilet on the beach. The toilet has disabled access. There is a baby changing unit in the toilet. There are playground equipment elements, as well as bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of their waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there. You will also find benches on the beach.

Ragaciems Beach
The official swimming area “Ragaciems Beach” is situated in Ragaciems, rural municipality of Lapmežciems, at the end of Zvejnieku Street. The swimming area is not signposted.
There is a changing booth, an information stand and two toilets — one at the end of Zvejnieku Street in Ragaciems and the other by Ragaciems Piers. The toilet has disabled access. There are playground equipment elements, outdoor gym elements, as well as bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of their waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
No lifeguard is on duty. There are buoys / cordoned off designated swimming areas. The swimming area is inspected monthly by the Health Service which performs water analyses.
The visitors’ information stand has information about giving first aid in case of drowning, swimming area management contact information, as well as water quality data along with a notice that pets must be kept on lead and smoking is restricted.
Two private parking lots are available:
- Parking lot by Talsi highway at the end of Zvejnieku Street;

The Slow Mile, Aizrags Beach
The swimming area “Aizrags” is situated in the northern part of the official swimming area “Ragaciems Beach”, in the section of the Slow Mile — in the Lapmežciems rural municipality, closer to Ragaciems. The swimming area is signposted “Uz jūru” along with parking information.
The beach features a changing booth, an information stand, a toilet, benches and tables and bonfire–picnic places, as well as playground equipment. The toilet does not have disabled access. There are no baby changing units in the toilet. There are bins in the beach parking lot, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
A designated boarded path leads from the parking lot to the beach, but the swimming area itself does not have disabled access and is not pushchair-accessible.
There is no lifeguard is on duty on the beach, but the manager of the parking lot has first aid equipment on site.
The information stand offers visitors information about the location and boundaries of the swimming area, contact information of the swimming area managers, as well as water quality data, active recreation opportunities, emergency services contact information, respecting public order, as well as prohibition of pets and smoking restrictions.
Active recreation opportunities on the beach include jet-ski hire and other water activities provided by the individual service provider Edvīns Pildiņš and SEDUMA SUPI, offering SUP board hire on the Ragaciems beach (https://www.facebook.com/sedumasupi).
For your information: Emergency transport can access the beach by the ramp at the end of Zvejnieku Street in Ragaciems.

The Slow Mile, Kuplās priedes beach
An unofficial swimming area “Kuplā priede” is found in the Slow Mile section — in the rural municipality of Lapmežciems, closer to Klapkalnciems. The swimming area is signposted “Uz jūru” along with parking information.
The beach features a changing booth, an information stand, a toilet, benches and tables and bonfire–picnic places, as well as playground equipment. The toilet does not have disabled access. There are no baby changing units in the toilet. There are bins in the beach parking lot, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
A designated boarded path leads from the parking lot to the beach, but the swimming area itself does not have disabled access and is not pushchair-accessible.
There is no lifeguard is on duty on the beach, but the manager of the parking lot has first aid equipment on site.

Lapmežciems – Bigauņciems Beach
The unofficial swimming area “Lapmežciems – Bigauņciems Beach” or “Kupskalnu beach” is found in the Lapmežciems rural municipality on the border between Lapmežciems and Bigauņciems. It is accessed by Kupskalnu nature trail, which also gives the beach the second name. The beach and the nature trail are signposted. The beach can also be accessed along Kronīšu Street, Lomu Street and Kurpnieku Street.
There is a changing booth, an information stand, as well as a children’s playground on the beach. There is an outdoor gym at the end of Kronīšu Street. There is also an accessible toilet on the beach. There are bins on the beach, however the visitors are urged not to dispose of waste on the beach but rather take it home and dispose of it there.
No lifeguard is on duty.

Swimming places by rivers, lakes and ponds
Swimming Area in Tukums by Lake Melnezers
The swimming area of Lake Melnezers is situated in a forest on the outskirts of Tukums. It is a favourite recreation spot for the locals. There is a swimming area on the lake shore with a diving board, benches and loungers for sunbathing, a small changing booth, rubbish bins, as well as a children’s play area and an outdoor gym. In the area of the lake, there are trails for hiking, Nordic walking and jogging.
Visitors to the swimming area have access to basketball and beach volleyball courts. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season.
A narrow, tarmac-covered road leads through the forest to a small parking lot by the swimming area.
The swimming area undergoes water quality testing, the results of which can be viewed at www.tukums.lv in the environment section.

Swimming Area in Irlava by River Abava
The swimming area in Irlava by River Abava is located near the Irlava Recreation Centre. There are signs pointing to the swimming area and a parking lot by the Recreation Centre. The swimming area is equipped with basic infrastructure, including changing booths, picnic tables and benches, as well as bins, toilets and bonfire places.
Visitors of the swimming area can enjoy various active recreation and sport activities in the nearby volleyball, basketball, football and beach volleyball courts and the outdoor gym.

Swimming Area in Kandava by River Abava
The swimming area in Kandava by River Abava is situated on the boundary of the town — the large sign “Kandava” serves as a good waymarker when going towards Sabile. The swimming area is not improved with any infrastructure, but water quality is analysed and the results are published online at www.tukums.lv in the environment section.

Swimming Area by Lake Sēme
This is the only swimming area with free access to a state public lake on municipal land. Next to Lake Sēme, a recreational area is set up with improved lake bottom in the swimming area, a floating plankway, a wooden picnic table and bench, a bin and wooden toilet. The swimming area undergoes water quality testing, the results of which can be viewed at www.tukums.lv in the environment section.

Swimming Area in Kandava by Teteriņu Lake
A well-equipped recreation site has been set up on Teteriņu Lake with a beach and white sea sand, improved lake bottom by the bathing grounds, a wooden plank and a boulder table with benches. There are changing cabins, toilets and bins at the swimming area. The swimming area undergoes water quality testing, the results of which can be viewed at www.tukums.lv in the environment section.
An active recreation set is built next to the swimming area — the Kandava rope obstacle course with two rope obstacle courses. The rules of use of the obstacle course are placed next to it (applies to both the large and small one).

Kandava Technical College of Agriculture Stadium with Outdoor Pool
The sports centre of the Kandava Technical College of Agriculture with the stadium and an outdoor pool is situated next to Lake Teteriņi. The outdoor pool has a diving tower (3, 5, 7 and 10 metres). Visitors can access the stadium, the football pitch and several basketball courts, as well as tennis courts. There is a driving range nearby.
The territory also has tent and picnic areas, a summer café “Nāriņa” and a summer café “Teteriņi”. The swimming area undergoes water quality testing, the results of which can be viewed at www.tukums.lv in the environment section.

Swimming Area by the Slampe Pond
The central swimming area by the central pond of Slampe is set up near the Tukums-Jelgava highway. The swimming area is accessible by car, and there is a small parking lot nearby. The parking lot is marked with boulders (not signposted). The local government updates the swimming area each year with a fresh layer of sand. The swimming area has some basic infrastructure, including a changing booth, 2 benches, bins. There is no toilet, information stand or buoy at the swimming area. The swimming area undergoes water quality testing, the results of which can be viewed at www.tukums.lv in the environment section.

Swimming Area by Milzkalne Pond
The Milzkalne pond is found in the Milzkalne village near the apartment buildings, between the allotments and the forest. When visiting the swimming area, the visitors are asked to park their cars on the right hand side of the Milzkalne-Tukums highway (V-1446) — in the lay-by past the Milzkalne bus stop going towards Tukums. Please do not enter the territory of apartment buildings not to prevent access of local residents to their apartments; back in the day, the pond was dug for the locals, which is why there is no suitable access for tourists. Likewise, visitors are asked to respect the locals by keeping noise to the minimum.
The pond has a plank with benches. There is a small changing booth by the pond built by the local residents, as well as a small bin. We are asking visitors to take their rubbish away with them.
It is strictly forbidden to light bonfires next to the pond as it is within the village territory and it is an area of increased fire risk.

Swimming Area by Smārde Pond
The Smārde Pond is the most recently established swimming spot in the vicinity of Tukums. “The blue lagoon” — as the locals call it — was dug in the spring of 2021. You can park the car at a distance of 300 m from the pond at the parking lot of the “Wind garden” park (dendrarium). A small slope is built next to the pond for children and young people to be used in the winter.

Swimming Area in Lapmežciems — “Siliņupe Swimming Area”
The Siliņupe swimming area in Lapmežciems is tucked away on the banks of Siliņupe River about 200 metres from the Siliņupe dam, which is closer to the lake. The parking lot is about 200 metres away from the swimming spot (at the end of Ezera Street). The swimming area has some basic infrastructure, including a changing booth, 2 benches, bins. There is no information stand or a buoy at the swimming area. Currently no water quality analyses are performed.
For your information: The swimming area cannot be accessed by emergency vehicles. Emergency vehicles can access the parking lot at the end of Ezera Street.
